Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week

A Little History and a Lot of Heart đŸđŸŒ»

Every May, something sweet happens across the country. Students draw pictures, parents write notes, and communities pause to say thank you to the people who show up every single day to educate, inspire, and shape the next generation. But how did Teacher Appreciation Week come to be? And how can you make sure the teacher in your life feels truly celebrated this year? Let's dig in. 💛

A Brief History of Teacher Appreciation Week

The story behind Teacher Appreciation Week is rooted in one woman's belief that teachers deserved to be seen. Around 1944, Arkansas teacher Mattye Whyte Woodridge began writing to political and education leaders about the need for a national day to honor teachers, and eventually wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt, who in 1953 persuaded Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day.

It was a big step, but it took time to fully take root. The first National Teacher Day was not officially observed until March 7, 1980. From there, the National Education Association extended the occasion to last a full week, and since 1984, Teacher Appreciation Week has been celebrated during the first full week of May each year, with National Teacher Day falling on the Tuesday of that week. Why It Matters

Teaching is one of the most demanding and most meaningful professions there is. Teachers arrive early, stay late, spend their own money on supplies, and pour their hearts into every student, often without nearly enough recognition in return. Teacher Appreciation Week is a chance to change that, even just for a moment.

A handwritten note, a small gift, or a simple "thank you" can go a long way. And trust us, they notice.

Gift Ideas That Go Beyond the Apple 🍎

If you want to show a teacher just how much they mean to you, here are a few ideas that feel genuine and thoughtful:

  • A heartfelt handwritten note sharing a specific memory or moment they made a difference.

  • A gift card to their favorite coffee shop or bookstore.

  • A cozy, curated gift box packed with things that help them rest, recharge, and feel celebrated.

That last one? We happen to know just the place. 😉
